Survivor Ken: Fist of the North Star

The arrival of a game adaptation of the adventures of the man with seven scars always something special. Between longing and fear that once again this prestigious name crack of a production dead before you know it is sweaty hands and body shaking as you get into Fist of the North Star: Ken's rage. Because this game is hiding behind the developer Koei, whose long list of beat 'em all is revered by some as she is hated by others. Will he's lucky star Ken?

After Gundam mechas and it was the turn of another prestigious license straight out of Japan to integrate the large family of Musou , known at home as Dynasty Warriors . These ultra beat'em all nags, real songs to the glory of the hype of buttons, have become the spearheads studio Koei . Boasting a fan community acquired this concept, the Japanese developer has created a stir by announcing Fist of the North Star: Ken's rage . For those who have lived in a cave in Nepal in recent years or, you're excused, too young to have lived his accession, is the manga Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the home) that Fist of the North Star is adapted. A profound work on a background of post-apocalyptic world, quickly booed in our countries because of its character (very) violent. Base material inspiring a certain brutality, a genre that resides on the hard-castagne ... the addition seems set to give a perfect result. But is it enough just to honor a license worship like this? The title opens with a cutscene that is sure to ruffle the hair of more than one player, as it refers to past memories to follow the adventures of Kenshiro . A quick tour of the options to see with pleasure that it is possible to keep the Japanese voices, adjusting the level of violence (mostly color of blood) and the level of difficulty. There is also a part of the menu devoted to game statistics but mainly acting as an encyclopedia on the world of Ken, like that found in many Dynasty Warriors . A great addition that will allow beginners to learn more about the characters in this story, although it would be a shame to see the work in this way only. It is now time to get into the legend of Ken, the only way this early in the game, which will grow rapidly thereafter other content.

From his first appearance against Zeed up final showdown against the giant Raoh, not to mention his reunion with Shin and other masters of Nanto , nothing has been set aside. The work is respected as best as possible. Some dialogues are faithfully transcribed and character modeling is so convincing she wants, except maybe the costumes off-topic and Mamiya, that illustrates the recent merger studio Koei and Tecmo ( Dead or Alive ). But the narrative is reduced to its simplest device. With a brief summary of the facts on the bottom of still images, interspersed with a few verbal exchanges between the main characters here are made in minimalism.  Despite this simplicity, this is enough to correctly place the important elements of the scenario and bring in as and the story of these characters oh so charismatic. Much Figures Hokuto No Ken will also playable, namely Rei, Mamiya, Shin, Toki, Souther, and of course Jagi Raoh. It is far less important than what we are accustomed Koei and some gaps, as Yuda, a slight disappointment. Yet each character wants to be different to play each other and everyone enjoys a good treatment of its integration in history.
But up foremost to our hero and his adventure, fourteen chapters long, for a period of around seven hours straight (and more if one is striving to meet the secondary objectives). A story that will live in a post-apocalyptic world from beginning to end, for better or for worse. Graphically, nothing very interesting on the horizon, the environments are empty and redundant, oscillating between plains, cities and a few interiors. It is generally a higher quality than what has typically Koei , but far, far more references like that. References that Fist of the North Star seems tempted to approach this story mode is much more defining in its mechanical, like a classic beat 'em all, rather than Dynasty Warriors . Finally the new one is tempted to say. Yes but in a highly competitive industry like this, Ken will be difficult to keep up.

A star of the north a little too far west

The Legend mode is therefore conducted simply as a "beat them all" ordinary and advance it until you hit the boss deal that marks the end of the level. The concern, in addition to the flatness of the level design is that the background is relatively poor and without ambition. The basic attacks are very rare (although the technique is to go and allows for infinite combos) and above, marked by a very bad feeling to slow down voluntarily, and at each blow. Downtime is variable, up nearly a half-second when powerful blows, resulting clashes chopped plus a very strange rhythm, in stark contrast to the kind of nervousness. In addition, Ken is very slow, both in his travels in his attacks. A real grandpa.
Fortunately, the fighting related skill points that can be exchanged between each level against various improvements: attack power, defense, special abilities, combos etc improved. The system is well thought out, improvements are numerous and all add a touch of personalization that is proving valuable and addictive. This skill tree also improves its special attacks and unlock new. These techniques, based on those of the manga, manage to bring a touch of rhythm and are more enjoyable they touch the fiber nostalgic. Hitting an opponent with a hail of punches as Ken did in the anime brings a nice sense of power. A feeling which intensifies during the fighting against the boss in one against one, and which end always on a Quick Time Event showing the outburst of Ken. We regret all the same lack of staging high can make epic moments as in the original work. The progression is generally slow, and all the more frustrating that Fist of the North Star is strange for a family game of the Warriors from Koei , there are too few enemies. It is very often found to fight groups of less than ten villains, and run after the last two to allow a door to open and move forward. The worst thing is that Ken has only a few attacks in the area and brought very low. All this increases the heaviness of everything and even gives a vital interest to taunt (challenge): it allows the enemy to regroup and eliminate them faster. Koei was he aware of concerns that would rate this aspect?
